An online resource for ophthalmologists, physicians, medical students and optometrists
Optic-disc.org is an educational resource for health care professionals who are required to examine the optic nerve.
Optic nerve assessment and evaluation can be a complex task, but it is hoped that this website helps by way of a comprehensive image library and a series of useful tutorials.
It is our aim to keep the library up to date with high quality images and the tutorial bank growing, so keep an eye on the news section to find out what’s been added, and what’s coming up soon.
Your feedback is essential to make optic-disc.org a valuable resource, so please use the contact page to get in touch with your comments.
The second most important piece of information in patients with or at-risk-for glaucoma is the nature of the optic disc (the first being the history). Yet examination of the disc is often cursory, with much misinterpretation. Even time consuming evaluations of the disc are often misleading. This is doubly unfortunate, because the patients suffer unnecessarily due to over- or under-treatment, and in actuality, evaluation of the salient, clinically relevant aspects of the disc is not difficult. Clearly knowing the nature of the anterior angle is important, as is an estimate of the intra-ocular pressure. But the nature of the disc is essential to deciding what has happened and what needs to be done. The present teaching material is practical, clear, important, and clinically relevant. It will materially help clinicians give their patients better, more appropriate and more effective care.
